A Birthday With No Cupcakes

Posted on: June 26, 2010

Mark and I went to our friend’s daughter’s 1st birthday today.

As we were driving to the party, I turned to Mark and asked, “Do you think they’ll have cupcakes?!?!”

Mark said no, and said it was much more likely that they would have a birthday cake. Disappointed, I agreed.

Well, Mark was right. They had 3 birthday cakes! The mom bought a marble birthday cake from Publix. Now, you all know how I feel about the chocolate cupcakes from Publix, and I feel about the same regarding Publix chocolate cake. However, this cake was mostly vanilla with a little bit of chocolate swirled in. It was delicious.

Did you know that if you get a birthday cake from Publix and it says “Happy 1st birthday” on it, Publix makes a smaller cake with the same theme so the 1-year-old can have a cake all to him or herself to smash their hands in it? Very cute idea. We were actually talking about scamming the system and if it’s someones 21st, 31st, 41st, etc birthday (you get the idea), you can get extra cake and write in the missing number later. I know, that’s terrible and we would never do that, but it’s a good thought!

Well, the third cake came in because Michele’s mom made her granddaughter a 1st birthday Elmo cake that was as cute as could be. It was in the shape of Elmo’s head and was frosted to perfection. It was given to Mikayla (instead of the small Publix one) who had a field day with it.

After about 15 minutes with this cake, Mikayla looked like she had gone through a war. There was a ton of red food coloring to get it to the color of Elmo so this child was covered in red icing. Unlike me on my 1st birthday, she was laughing and having a ball. Since, of course, you know the story from my About Me section, I hated cake when I was little. When I had my first birthday and my parents gave me my own cake to dive in, I just stared at it. So, they placed my hands in the icing and I started crying. And that was the end of that… Mikayla, on the other hand, loved it.

Happy Birthday Mikayla! Next time, cupcakes! (just kidding Michele, the cake was great!)
